Hearing loss, it’s symptoms and it’s treatments.

Hearing loss can vary depending on the cause, which part of the ear is impaired and the severity of the hearing loss. Our ears are made up of three systems, the outer ear, middle ear and the inner ear. Your hearing loss diagnosis depends on which of these three systems; have been impaired (one or more) and the severity of impairment (ranging from mild to profound).

The most common cause of hearing loss are ageing and noise exposure, however there are many other causes such as middle ear problems, medications that are toxic to the ear, hearing loss at birth, etc.

A hearing loss can cause difficulties with communication and understanding speech, especially in the presence of background noise.

Hearing loss can cause difficulties communicating, understanding speech especially in the presence of background noise.

Amongst other issues, those with a hearing loss will often ask others to repeat themselves, turn up the volume of the TV/phone or experience ringing/buzzing in their ears (known as tinnitus). The impact of not treating your hearing loss can reach across many aspects of your life including difficulties in your work environment, frustration with your loved ones due to miscommunication, loneliness or isolation due to decreased socialization.

A hearing loss can also lead to possible negative effects on your cognitive health.

So, what can be done about it?
Well, there are many treatments available ranging from fitting of hearing aids, bone anchored hearing systems, sound therapy, aural rehabilitation, and more. The sooner you start the better.

Step 1 to start your hearing journey will be visiting us for a diagnostic hearing test. We will then diagnose your potential hearing loss and customize the best possible treatment plan for you.

At Hearology, we prioritize patient autonomy and pride ourselves in ensuring that you are actively involved in this journey that we will walk together!
